Balder and Joost, both live in Amsterdam when they're not travelling the world. While they know each other for years, it was still a big challenge to travel together. Preparation of the Tokelau Voyage started months ahead by choosing the right schedule, and the right time to go. They prepared and packed and planned to visit an island resembling Fantasy Island or Bounty Island? (no link to the chocolate bar). The diary starts in Apia, capital of the country of Western Samoa.

Part 3: Nukunonu by day - What's that on my plate mate?

We were invited to go on a barbeque. Not just a barbeque, but one with most of the villagers and on a remote part of this beautiful atoll. The boat trip took us over the bleu lagoon to the 'outskirts' of the atoll. Because no one lives on this side of the atoll, there are a lot of birds, fish and plants, true paradise….

Last part we decided to go snorkeling, to see in living what we could expect as lunch. In the lagoon we've seen all kinds of small and colorful fish and thousands of hermit crabs. The barbeque was one big party, we ate, talked about life on Tokelau and some of the villagers were singing traditional songs. As drinks there were fresh coconuts who are, when they are green, at their best to drink. The barbeque was rich of fish, chicken and pork. A real fest!

The most odd thing I've seen on the barbeque was what they call 'Uga uga' or the coconut crab (Bistro latro): a really big crab that lives mainly on land and feeds itself with coconuts. Fresh it is bleu with black, but after being barbecued it's all orange and very tasteful. Just before sunset the party ended and we were given a 'ride' home to Luana Liki's
